And did those feet … 15 pilgrim trails in the UK and Europe

Walkers of any faith or none will be inspired by our pick of historic, uplifting and long-distance pilgrimages, with transport links and places to rest weary legs each night

A thoroughly modern pilgrimage route, this 40-mile waymarked path was opened four years ago to celebrate the life of the seventh-century local heroine. The route goes in a semi-circle from Hinderwell near the coast, up on to the North York Moors, and down the Esk Valley to Whitby Abbey. On the way it takes in no fewer than eight churches dedicated to St Hilda, a fine Yorkshire “trod” – a stone pannierway indented by medieval wayfarers and their packhorses – and stepping stones over the River Esk at Lealholm.
Further information Walking St Hilda’s Way, £5 plus p&p from dalescourtpress.co.uk.
Getting there From Saltburn station take the X4 bus to Hinderwell. There are rail links to Middlesbrough from Whitby.

Walking in Italy: on the trail of Saint Francis of Assisi

We follow a route through the green hills of Umbria walked 800 years ago by the ‘first environmentalist’ – but swap prayer and poverty for soft pillows and handmade pasta

Peace, universal love, respect for the natural world… Francis of Assisi, the “first environmentalist”, is the sort of saint whose teachings even the most ardent secularist couldn’t object to. His celebration of simplicity and rejection of material possessions also chime with today’s distaste for heedless consumerism.

Spain’s best young chefs – and the restaurants where you’ll discover them

The rising stars of Spanish cuisine can be found running their own restaurants – often without the waiting lists and high prices of established venues

Every year, a roll-call of up-and-coming chefs compete to become Spain’s Cocinero Revelación (young cook of the year) at the Madrid Fusión gastronomy event. The 2020 shortlist, drawn up by food critics, featured several startup restaurants. Most of their chef-owners have chosen to return to their hometowns in attempt to wow customers with extravagant tasting menus, following experience at Spain’s top restaurants. This year’s winner – the first woman champion in 17 years of the contest – is Camila Ferraro, from Seville. All eight chefs are worth seeking out for high-quality food at (mostly) reasonable prices.
All prices exclude wine

10 of Europe’s best rural train journeys

Slow rail travel in beautiful landscapes is the joy of these branch lines, which don’t need to be booked in advance. Know a better one? Enter our competition to win two first-class Interrail Passes worth up to £768

This cross-border line linking Switzerland’s Valais region with Haute-Savoie in France is a tiddler among international rail routes and has never been used by grand expresses (even though it’s called the Mont-Blanc Express). The metre-gauge local railway from Martigny to Chamonix skirts the north side of the Mont Blanc massif and so connects standard-gauge lines on either side of the border. Climbing up from Martigny, there are tantalising glimpses of the ravine cut by the River Trient. The train passes great cliffs, twisting and turning with a feast of panoramic views. After crossing the French border at Vallorcine, look out for the Argentière glacier to the left.
From €28.50 one-way, 22 miles, 90 minutes, hourly, mont-blanc-express.ch

The best ice rinks in the UK and Europe: readers’ tips

There’s nothing like skating in a beautiful European city for a blast of wintry fun, especially with a gløgg, glühwein or chocolat chaud to warm up with afterwards

The Maritime Museum in Greenwich has opened an ice rink this year for the first time. It’s outside the Queen’s House and gives a great view through the Royal Naval College to the Thames, creating a scenic skating experience. It’s less pricey than competing museum ice rinks, and less busy, too – no need to book online, simply turn up and buy tickets on the door. Next to the outdoor ice rink there is an indoor bar for those who simply wish to watch, and it’s open until late ...

10 of the best things to do in Cluj-Napoca, Romania: a local's guide

The ‘capital’ of Transylvania has a large student population and an arty vibe with excellent clubs and some of Europe’s best-loved electronic music festivals

The historic centre around Unirii Square, the largest square in Cluj, is beautiful. Look out for the Hotel Melody Central. It opened in 1890 as a hotel but has also been a jazz club and a chapel. St Michael’s church is a huge gothic building and sights around the square include Old Banffy Palace, which now houses the National Art Museum, and the old town hall. The three main squares in the city centre – Mihai Viteazul and Avram Iancu, as well as Unirii – are full of historic buildings and cosy bars.
