The Mad Kyoto Shoe Swapper & Other Short Stories By Rebecca Otowa Hardcover: 160 pages Publisher: Tuttle Publishing (March 24, 2020) ISBN-10: 4805315512 There are 13 stories in Rebecca Otowa’s book, most of which are surprisingly dark, with disappearances and deaths both being a common theme. The longest story in the collection is ‘A Year of Coffee and Cake’, a tale of a suspected murder shrouded in secrecy, while the shortest is ‘Showa Girl’, which paints the precarious position of a girl ending up marrying a POW back from Siberia after World War II. In fact, most of the stories depict the harsh realities women face in Japan. From being expected to cook and clean daily to bearing children, women carry a burden that Japanese men simply can ignore, and that sparks the author’s frustration and anger. The ‘Watch Again’ chapter symbolizes this more than any other story. It starts when a wife coming home from work sees her husband, who currently lives elsewhere, watching wedding videos over and over.
