2020 In Travel: How Best Laid Plans Became Time at Home
In a year with much less than typical travel, I still wanted to do a yearly summary post for the trips I did take. Given there was seemingly more trips that didn’t happen than those that did, I will also reflect on the trips that I was unable to take. Looking forward, I think it […]

How will travel to the EU change for Britons after Brexit?
From 31 December, travel to EU countries will be different for UK citizens. We look into how passports, healthcare, driving and duty-free will be affected
The impact of Brexit on European travel after 31 December 2020 is going to be a complicated one. A recent survey by Discover Ferries, which represents ferry operators in the UK and Ireland, reports that only one in three people felt confident about travel changes after the end of the transition period. Only 6% of respondents were aware of all the changes affecting EU travel in 2021.
Passports, healthcare, pets, driving and duty-free shopping were some of the topics causing confusion. Recent Covid-related travel restrictions have made things even less clear.

The Danish New Year’s Eve dish that links my ancestors and me – plus the recipe
Chef Trine Hahnemann on cod with mustard sauce – and the memories of visits to family in Ærøskøbing it brings back
Ærø is a small island in southern Denmark. To get there you need to take a ferry from Svendborg. I have boarded that ferry many times – I always feel a sense of belonging. My father comes from Ærø. And I have fond memories from when my grandfather, called farfar, was alive and I would visit him. The ferry takes you to Ærøskøbing – a quaint town with cobbled streets and tiny old houses in lots of different colours. When I arrive, I am immediately transported into another world, where time seems different.
Ærø represents my family’s history, which is very much linked to food, both everyday eating and celebrations. As a little girl I would often spend New Year’s Eve with my farfar. One year I was snowed in when visiting for Christmas: the sea was frozen solid between Ærø and the main island of Funen, and nobody could get off. To celebrate New Year’s Eve, we went for dinner at my Aunt Sarah’s house. Every year she would serve cod with mustard sauce and a range of accompaniments. I will never forget the first time I was introduced to this traditional dinner.

‘It symbolises the end of the year and the new one beginning’: folk dance in Romania
Our series on evocative travel photographs continues with Alecsandra Raluca Drăgoi documenting traditional Romanian folk festivals
The photograph is part of a personal project called Ritual, which documents costumes and traditions across the north-east of Romania. In 2018, I spent the winter travelling to various festivals where I set up a mobile studio to photograph the participants in their costumes in front of a black backdrop. These festivals are unique and have an incredible energy – everyone has a great time dancing and singing. This particular image was captured at a festival in Botoșani.
It’s different from the rest of the series because of the colourful costumes and the size of the group. And getting them to stand against the snow created a good contrast. First, I asked them to pose, but after a few seconds I asked them to dance so I could capture more of the detail in their costumes, which have been very well preserved over the years.

Review: Plaza Premium Lounge Vancouver Domestic Terminal
Over the next several weeks, I’m going to alternate between Alaska posts and “classic” trip reports. These cover trips I took pre-pandemic, but postponed writing about. Why? While these reports likely won’t represent products available now, or anytime soon, they provide a snapshot of the prior “normal” world. Maybe you’ll find it interesting reading today […]

Earn 5% Back at Wholesale Clubs
Earning points and cash back is by far my favorite pastime. Many credit cards offer 1 – 3% back in the form of points or direct cash back in select categories, but few offer 5%. One of my favorite cards in my wallet is the Chase Freedom for it’s rotating categories which offer 5 times […]
