10 of the best autumn sun holidays in southern Europe
Characterful places to stay, where for another month or so the weather is balmy enough for the beach and alfresco evenings
Autumn is near-perfect in Crete: the masses have left, days reach 24C, the Libyan Sea is still bath-like, and tavernas are still open and pouring raki. Much of the island’s east has been overdeveloped but there is a lovely, low-key alternative on the south coast. White River Cottages is a hamlet of rustic self-catering stone houses amid olive, pine and carob trees in the rocky Aspros Potamos valley, near the pretty harbour of Makriyialos. The sea is a 15-minute walk, and there’s is good hiking inland, up through the gorge to the mountain village of Pefki, where an excellent taverna awaits.
Studios for two from €81 a night, minimum four nights

Balearic bliss: 10 of the best hotels in Mallorca
Discover sun, sea and scenery – and where to stay on the beautiful island
This chic, family-run agroturismo lies at the heart of Pla de Mallorca, the central plain, dotted with small towns and villages accessed by quiet country lanes. This is the authentic heart of the island and Gossalba has distilled that feeling down into a charming nine-room retreat. The location may be rural, but there’s no scrimping on comfort – rooms are light and spare, with traditional carved wooden furniture and terracotta tiled floors, and the freshwater pool is perfect for cooling off after a day’s exploring. There’s no restaurant, but owners Cati and Ken are on hand to make recommendations and reservations.

My Alpine trail running adventure holiday in Switzerland
In Verbier a new network of high-altitude running routes is opening up the mountains like never before
‘Freedom. That’s what you’re chasing in the mountains.” I was hurrying along a slope below Mont Fort in Verbier to keep pace with Emily Vaudan, a trail running guide for new activity company Bee Heidi, and I kept stopping, trying to run but distracted by the views.
Every so often, she paused to shout encouragement – and a bit of life philosophy – as I gingerly picked my way over scree and shoogly stones that could easily snap an ankle. Mont Blanc and the Grand Combin massif encircled the skyline ahead; at 2,500m, unbroken views of Europe’s most spectacular peaks and glaciers were our hard-won prize.

On holiday in southern France chez Le Corbusier
The wild coast between Monaco and Italy is home to Le Corbusier’s holiday cabin – and his favourite beach bar-next-door
I wish I had a beach hut like Le Corbusier’s. A perfect place to self-isolate on the French Riviera’s wildest stretch of coastline.
The Swiss-born architect chose Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, halfway between Monaco and the Italian border, to build his retreat in a medieval village that overlooks a rugged, tortoise-shaped cape beyond the pebble beaches of du Buse and Golfe Bleu.

Peace, antiquity and beaches: a guide to five famous Greek islands
Corfu, Kos, Rhodes, Crete and Santorini are among Greece’s most popular islands – but there’s tranquillity beyond the hotspots
Viewed from an incoming ferry, the island’s semi-circular volcanic caldera, surrounded by towering reddish-brown cliffs and crowned by whitewashed houses perched perilously above the sea, is awe-inspiring. The black volcanic beaches on the eastern shore, which would be the defining feature of a lesser destination, seem here to be the cherry on the cake.
