Egypt - Luxor and The Valley of the Kings video.
Egypt - Luxor and The Valley of the Kings
We begin our journey to the ancient riverside City of Luxor, cruising though the Nile Valley to the southern City of Aswan. Luxor was once home to the ancient civilization of Thebes and history here dates back about 6000 years. It’s when you visit a place like this that you truly appreciate how short a human life span is, and how enduring human achievement can truly be. Most of this temple complex was built by King Amenhotep the 3rd during the 18th Dynasty making it about 3,500 years old. What’s even more incredible is that was part of Egypt’s 'modern kingdom'', now just imagine what came before that! The size and grandeur of Luxor’s wonderfully preserved monuments has made this area the greatest attraction after the Pyramids and when you visit Luxor temple, its not hard to see why.

A Traveler’s Reflection: Amazing Toilets on the Road Video.
A Traveler’s Reflection: Amazing Toilets on the Road
Many years ago, I traveled through Japan — and one of my most vivid memories from that trip is was the toilets. In the middle of one January night, I got up, needing to go down the hall. The rocks in the Zen garden were covered by snow. There was no central heating. I could see my breath. A kimono had been put out for my trip to the bathroom, but it was comically small, and my slippers ended at the start of my heels. Shivering as I shuffled, I made my way to the shared bathroom of my ryokan. Pulling down my pants, I sat slowly…dreading the chill of the seat. It was heated — one of the most delightful surprises I’ve experienced over a lifetime of travels, the memory of which I still cherish. And before I made any noise, a playful trickle of water played a soundtrack designed to mask any noise I might make. There’s nothing like traveling in Japan. That was a long time ago. Just last week, staying in a five-star Asian-themed hotel in Boston, I enjoyed another amazing toilet. It knew when I was coming, welcomed me warmly, and provided a trickling soundtrack. Delightful déjà vu. Are you comfortable sharing your toilet-on-the-road story with me? If so, it’s your turn.

A Snippet of my Symphonic Journey Experience Video.
A Snippet of my Symphonic Journey Experience
Talking short is harder than talking long. I had eight two-minute talks to give as my part of a Boston Pops concert last week, and I worked hard to get it right. I practiced in my hotel room, on stage before people arrived, and then did it for real — in front of a sold-out house. Each time I introduced a piece, it was an opportunity to show off the value of a tour guide who can set the scene to help you appreciate European culture. I was reluctant to distract myself by playing with my phone, but the thrill of being part of a Boston Pops performance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and an amazing conductor was a highlight of my tour-guiding career, and I had to share a snippet of the experience with you. We debuted this concert with my hometown orchestra several years ago, but just this year other orchestras have been booking it themselves. After Boston, I’ve got Colorado (Sept. 15), Houston (Oct. 12-13), and Seattle (Jan. 17) booked. If you like history, music, and travel, this is a fusion of those delights, resulting in a delightful experience. (You can watch the original concert streaming at http://bit.ly/2KxLS0E)

A Symphonic Journey: Boston
I’m still buzzing from a thrilling experience I had last week in Boston. For two nights, I teamed up with the Boston Pops and conductor Jacomo Bairos to host a live performance of my public television concert “Rick Steves’ Europe: A Symphonic Journey.” Together, we shared seven stirring anthems from the Romantic era that celebrate how different European countries mix a love of music with patriotism. I got to be the tour guide, setting up each piece with historical and cultural context — and then, as gorgeous images were projected on a huge screen, the orchestra took us there musically. In this clip, I bring you with me on stage an hour before the show — and then I share a few of my favorite moments as the night unfolds. The original concert is streaming now at http://bit.ly/2IA5iQv — or you can experience it live when I join the Colorado Symphony this September, the Houston Symphony this October, and the Seattle Symphony next January. Happy (and musical) travels! (Thank you to Michael Blanchard of the Boston Pops for sharing his wonderful photos.)

Egypt - Cairo's Museum, JW Marriott and the Kan Al Khalili Bazaar
If you only ever visit one museum in your lifetime it should be this one. The Egyptian Museum houses over 100,000 relics and antiquities from every period of in ancient Egypt’s history, including the treasures of Tutankhamen. There is so much to see here that some claim it would take almost a year to view every exhibit. From the old to the new! Here we make our way to Mirage City, a true oasis, a major residential development, the luxurious new JW Marriott Hotel and Peter Harridine designed 18 hole Championship Golf Course, in the sands of the desert. As the day ends we check out the shops and markets in the city heart – the most popular being the Kan Al Khalili Bazaar. The Kan Al Khalili is an incredible maze of streets and alleyways. The market was founded back in the 14th century and if you talk to a lot of the vendors here they will actually tell you that they are related to the founders of the market itself

It was a rainy day on the Emerald Isle, and I was somewhere I had never been before: St. George’s Market. Join me and my guide Jackie there now in this little clip. Here’s how I wrote this place up for our Rick Steves Ireland guidebook (http://bit.ly/2ZoqL4n St. George’s Market was the largest covered Victorian produce market in Ireland. Today, the farmers are gone and everyone else, it seems, has moved in. Three days a week (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, about 9:00-15:00), St. George’s Market becomes a thriving artisan, crafts and flea market with a few fish and produce stalls to round things out. With a diverse array of street food and homemade goodies added to the mix, it’s a fun place for lunch (5 blocks east of City Hall, at the corner of Oxford and East Bridge streets, tel. 028/9043-5704).

A Memorial Garden in Belfast Video.
A Memorial Garden in Belfast
I have always believed that no trip to the Emerald Isle is complete without a visit to Northern Ireland. And I recently spent a few days there, after a stop in Dublin, researching the next edition of our Rick Steves Ireland guidebook: http://bit.ly/2thHfxN. In Belfast, I spent a fascinating 90 minutes with Tucker, a guide from Cab Tours Belfast — a taxi tour company that is made up of both Catholic and Protestant driver guides who are committed to giving unbiased, dual-narrative tours. On Bombay Street, we stopped at the Clonard Martyrs Memorial Garden. Join us there now.

Rick Goes to Congress Video.
Rick Goes to Congress
I just enjoyed a very busy day on Capitol Hill, meeting with key members of Congress and advocating for an end to the federal prohibition on marijuana. My host for the day was Oregon Rep. Earl Blumenauer, and we packed a lot into our schedule. Take a peek here as we work with lawmakers to find a path forward for marijuana legalization, I join forces with Bread for the World — and even bump into Jon Stewart. I had breakfast this morning with some of my friends from NORML, and we were marveling at how dramatically the national mood on marijuana has shifted. These days, virtually every leader in the Democratic Party understands the need for change — and many Republicans also see the wisdom in ending prohibition. It’s exciting to see democracy in action.

A Gimmelwald Stroll Video.
A Gimmelwald Stroll
Enjoy a quiet moment with me in Gimmelwald, a little traffic-free village in Switzerland surrounded by alpine splendor. It was the evening magic hour, and I was just poking around the village, in perfect peace. The sun sets early when the sky is squeezed between mountains. BTW, it was a handful of discoveries like Gimmelwald back in the late 1970s that I called my “Back Doors.” And these gems were the special destinations upon which I established my business, which back then was called “Europe Through the Back Door.” I’ve noticed that I’m kind of sentimental when I visit now — and when they still tickle my wanderlust, it makes me unspeakably happy.

Looking for the Matterhorn
I’m home now from my spring trip to Europe — a busy month and a half of travel across Italy, Switzerland, and Ireland. It’s been fun to stow you along with me here on YouTube — and I hope you can stick around, because I’ve still got a few more little videos to share with you. I was just in Zermatt, high in the Swiss Alps. I’ve been here twice now, and I have yet to see the fabled Matterhorn. I spent a day in my hotel room writing — and constantly wondering if she’d peek through the clouds…

Zermatt Before the Tourists? Video.
Zermatt Before the Tourists?
Hello from the Swiss Alps! I’m in the shadow of the mighty Matterhorn, in the little town of Zermatt. Zermatt is extremely touristy, but once upon a time, it was a humble village of farmers. Walking down into town from the high lift stations, you pass through hamlets with 300-year-old buildings of stone and larch — and it’s easy to imagine a simpler time. An advantage of being here before the summer peak season hits is that there are no crowds. While high-country hikes are snowed in, lots of low-elevation hikes through little farm hamlets (which are filled with Airbnb guests in the summer) are empty and evoke the old days. Join me as I imagine Zermatt once upon a time, long, long ago…with more cows than tourists.

Who’s the Highest Person in Europe? Video.
Who’s the Highest Person in Europe?
I suppose there are people higher than me right now in Europe, but nobody who is just stepping out of a lift is higher than me. Joined by local guide Amadé Perrig, I’m in a whiteout on top of the Little Matterhorn, looking at where the big Matterhorn would be on a nice day. We’re 12,740 feet above sea level, high above Zermatt — and higher than the lifts above Chamonix and the Jungfraujoch. Amadé, who’s climbed the Matterhorn many times, spent his career promoting tourism in Zermatt, perhaps the ultimate Alpine resort. Even in a whiteout, he couldn’t help himself and broke out into a yodel. Of course, it’s a touristy show, but it’s also real. Amadé worked in a village farm with cows and goats, carrying milk down from the high Alps. He yodeled when his Alpine spirit was doing flip-flops then, and 60 years later, he still does. I generally try to do my guidebook research when things are hopping and in season — but my timing is a bit off this visit, and I’m here in the downtime between skiing and hiking seasons. The high trails are snowed in, and lots of places (restaurants and activities) are closed. I’m scouting for a new episode about the best of the Swiss Alps, and I’m getting some great ideas for the crew — at the wrong time of year. I’ll be back in August, and maybe then I’ll actually see the Matterhorn. Stay tuned…

A Day-Trip to the Gers from Toulouse, Episode 235 Video.
A Day-Trip to the Gers from Toulouse, Episode 235
Taking a day-trip from Toulouse to the Gers is something locals do all the time but foreign visitors don't think about because it's not on anybody's travel top 10 list. But maybe it should be because it's gorgeous! Warning: you won't run into many tourists and you'll probably have to practice your French. Totally worth it! Show Notes for this episode are here: http://bit.ly/2XlIetF #joinusinfrance #gers #occitanie #ruralfrance #dartagnan #3musketeers #condomfrance #gascogne

Discovering a Great Tool for Wine Lovers: The Coravin Video.
Discovering a Great Tool for Wine Lovers: The Coravin
I was dropping by the various wine bars in Bellagio (as one does when working) — and at Aperitivo Et Al, Andrea demonstrated a clever tool that pulls wine from a bottle with the ease of a nurse pulling blood from an arm. With the Coravin, he can serve fancy wine by the glass without worrying about finishing the bottle before the wine goes bad. Maybe I don’t get out much. (When I got back to my hotel and Googled the Coravin, I learned that it was invented in 2011 in Massachusetts.) Is this old news?
