ANA Buys Boeing 787s For Fleet Replacement
All Nippon Airways (ANA) has agreed to purchase 15 Boeing 787s with an option for an additional five airliners. This is important for Boeing as it went through January with zero aircraft orders and a dismal 2019 with an order book of negative 87 orders for the year. Yesterday, I posted plans by Alaska Airlines […]

Next stop, Stockholm: one family’s European rail adventure
London to Sweden by train and ferry made for a fun, frenetic family trip – then calm arrived at a holiday cabin amid the blissful waters of the Stockholm archipelago
Watching my two children struggle along the platform like geriatric tortoises under their new backpacks, I had a moment of doubt. It was 5am on a dull, Monday in London and we were about to embark on a journey that would take us, by train, all the way to Stockholm.
With the help of the Man in Seat 61 website, I worked out that a Global Interrail pass was the best way for our crew (my husband, me and our 11- and nine-year-old daughters) to get there. The pass covers most continental trains, is extremely flexible and – best of all – free for children under 12 accompanied by an adult. I also booked our hotels and a cabin on the Stockholm archipelago.

Vendée, France: an old-school family holiday
From seaside fun on sleepy Noirmoutier island to gobsmacking historical reenactments at Puy du Fou theme park, this area of western France offers a delicious dip into temps perdu
Low tide on the Passage du Gois reveals a scene that has barely changed in centuries. As the sea retreats, people armed with rakes and shovels set out across the sand flats either side of the cobbled causeway connecting Noirmoutier island with the mainland. Hunched over the rippled sand, they fill baskets and buckets with cockles and clams. Others use penknives to prise oysters off the rocks and pop them straight into their children’s mouths. One family offered our eight-year-old son an oyster, which he golloped down, declaring it delicious. For a moment we felt a little bit French.

I cycled from Dieppe to Nice and saw a different France
A 1,000km ride on cycle trails in the Seine, Loire and Rhône valleys takes in a France inaccessible by car – and brings a rare sense of freedom
The crunch of tyres on gravel rouses me from my doze. Damn it! I knew I shouldn’t have hit “snooze”. I unzip my tent and look out on to a dewy football field. A van has pulled into the car park – it’s the groundsman arriving for morning duties. I’d intended to be out of here before anyone found me, so wiggle out of the tent and pack it as quickly and quietly as I can. “Wild” camping is n’t always an Instagrammable glade in a forest – I’ll definitely be finding a campsite tonight. I slip away undetected and ride down the narrow, slumbering streets of Chaussy, a village 70km north-west of Paris. The crisp morning air soon blows away the sleep and, as I ride past sun-painted fields with their neat rows of crops, the mist dissipates.
This is day two of an eight-day ride from Dieppe to Nice, mainly following the river valleys of the Seine, Loire and Rhône. My bike is packed with everything I’ll need: clothes, tent and flapjacks. I’ve always felt riding a bicycle is the best way of exploring the world, but most of my touring so far has been within the UK, usually ending with a dip in the North Sea. But for this summer holiday, I would swap the North Sea for the Mediterranean. At the end of this I will lie on the beach in Nice, next to people who’ve probably been lying on the beach in Nice since I started cycling. But this way, I’ll have earned it.

Joining OneWorld Alliance Likely to Bring Changes at Alaska Mileage Plan
Alaska Airlines is planning on joining the OneWorld Alliance in 2021, and that will mean major changes for Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and elite flyers. A local’s guide to Berne, Switzerland: 10 top tips
It is one of Europe’s smallest capitals but punches above its weight when it comes to world-class galleries, unbeatable urban swimming and, of course, chocolate
Taking a dip in the river is a national pastime here, with the River Aare the basis of the city’s claim to be Europe’s urban swimming capital. Fed by meltwater from the Bernese Alps, the river has a magical blue colour, and it is perfectly clean to swim in, even in the city centre. The most popular spots are Marzilibad, an area with flat grassy lawns, easy access to the river and an open-air pool – and Lorrainebad, a little further downstream. The strength of the current means you need to plan where to get in and, more importantly, where you are going to get out (the exit points are all marked with red railings). Avoid the clearly marked weirs, where swimming is forbidden. There are paddleboards to hire at Tip-to-Tail. Information about the river’s temperature and the water’s flow rate is updated daily on my website, Aare Guru.

First Impressions: British Airways A350 Club Suite
Last weekend, I had the privilege of flying the brand new British Airways A350 “Club Suite”. Historically, BA’s Club World ranked as an also-ran of premium cabin products. Let’s face it, 8-across seating in Business Class hardly rates as cutting edge in 2020. Last year, though, BA introduced a new, reverse herringbone Club World seat, […]

10 of the best museums close to railway stations in Europe: readers’ tips
From antiquity to computer games, there’s never a dull moment for the culturally curious with a couple of hours to fill at a European station. And the cafes aren’t bad either
About a 15-minute walk from Berlin Ostbahnhof is the Computerspielemuseum (€9/€6), which is a haven for old and young who grew up playing computer games. There are loads of consoles there to play on, old and contemporary. Even games like Pong and Space Invaders can be sampled. They have a couple of re-creations of teenagers’ rooms from days gone by to add to the atmosphere. There was also a rather random interactive representation of the flames from the Back to the Future DeLorean projected on to the floor. It amused my gamer daughter to think her mum played some of these games, and we had a chance to exchange our experiences and challenge each other. The gift shop was cool too, with T-shirts and bags with retro designs.
